Arizona Foam & Spray’s foam roofs — constructed of closed cell, polyurethane spray foam covered with a reflective coating – decrease the amount of natural gas and electricity used to heat and cool buildings. Compared to conventional commercial roofs, spray-foam systems conserve 40 percent on natural gas bills, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). NIST also notes a 25 percent reduction on total electrical consumption.
While most roofing materials only offer one, spray foam has all three energy saving qualities:
- Conduction: Heat transfer is blocked by the high insulation R-value of closed cell spray foam, which can be double that of traditional materials.
- Convection: Buildings can gain or lose significant amounts of heat through air leaks. Quik-Shield spray foam roof systems create a seamless, monolithic surface and unsurpassed air barrier. Quik-Shield is self-flashing and adds additional protection against moisture and air infiltration around HVAC curbs, vents, skylights, and other roof penetrations, traditionally the high problem areas on roofs.
- Radiation: The white, elastomeric coating of a spray foam roof is also far more reflective than a conventional roof. High reflective roofs are not only beneficial, they are also mandated in some areas of the country. In addition, they have been proven to lower heat-island effects in large cities.
In addition, spray foam roofing systems do not use mechanical fasteners. Thermal Bridging through fasteners used on single-ply systems can cause up to 23% energy loss. Just 1″ or more of Quik-Shield roofing foam significantly reduces heat transfer through studs, fasteners, and roof deck gaps.
Roof fasteners and seams allow air to leak beneath the roof membrane, which can then create wind pressure beneath the membrane. This pressure can causing fluttering of the membrane and, potentially, roof blow off.
Quik-Shield spray foam roof systems fair significantly better in extreme weather, including hail, high winds, and falling debris. A post-Hurricane Katrina study conducted by NIST concluded that all spray foam roofs, with one minor exception sustained the hurricane without blow-off of the SPF or damage to flashings. Quik-Shield maintains this strength and durability while still weighing less than conventional roofs, typically by 50%.
